Raimi Comes Home to Horror!

Sam Raimi is coming back to the genre that started him off.

Variety reports that his next movie will be Drag Me to Hell, based on a script written by him and his brother Ivan.

It's being called a "Supernatural Thriller", which means that it's a horror movie they hope makes a lot of money. They're going to be releasing the film through Raimi's Ghosthouse Pictures, and possibly be the first great film to come out of there. Raimi's longtime partner in crime Rob Tabert will be co-producing, and had some good words to say about the project.

"Sam calls it a 'spook-a-blast,' a wild ride with all the chills and spills that 'Evil Dead' delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film," Tapert said. "When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment."

"The appeal to Sam on 'Drag Me to Hell' was returning to what he had once done and loved doing,, which was entertaining a very specific group of fans and providing a roller coaster ride for them," Tapert said. "He doesn't have the enormous pressure here that goes with handling a hundreds of millions of dollars franchise."

After this, Raimi is still planned to go to do The Hobbit since Peter Jackson wants nothing to do with it.

30 Days of Night Horror Movie Review

Josh Hartnett top lines the latest horror movie from Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures and it’s a bloody brilliant vampire flick.

Set in Barrow Alaska, 30 Days of Night (which is based on the groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name) begins as the inhabitants prepare themselves for a month without sunlight. As the residents begin boarding up their houses and preparing for the harsh winter, a mysterious stranger appears in town and sets about cutting them off from the rest of the world. As the sun sets, Sheriff Eben and his estranged Fire Marshall wife Stella (who finds herself stranded in town after an accident causes her to miss the last flight out of Barrow) discover that they are completely isolated for the next four weeks…and that’s when the vampires show up…but how can they be stopped when sunlight never comes?

Ghost House Pictures has done it again. This film looks amazing, has a wonderful cast and is scary, violent and very gory. I can’t believe it’s only a 15 here in the UK.

I was a huge fan of director David Slade’s previous film Hard Candy and he once again proves his talents by making an entirely different kind of genre film. Hard Candy was light, bright and largely suggestive, 30 Days of Night is dark and very visceral.

The cast are all excellent, as is the effects work, set pieces, stunt work, locations and the creepy unusual score.

There are however a few elements which prevent the film from being totally flawless and these are mainly the disappearance and reappearance of characters throughout the run time. Eben’s brother Jake seems to have no trouble wandering around in just a jumper (when everyone else is kitted out in huge parkas, hats and mittens) and outrunning the vamps, and despite addressing a lack of hiding places earlier in the film (not to mention the fact that everyone in town is supposedly dead except our main characters) as the vamps would smell them out, a load of people fill the streets at the climax…where the hell were they hiding for a month?

OVERALL SUMMARY
30 Days of Night is gorgeously shot, well written, directed and acted and is unsettling to watch. This is a cut above the rest of the Halloween season’s big screen offerings.

Cold Prey: Horror Movie Review

This Norwegian slasher movie has been causing a stir amongst genre fans this past year after a successful theatrical run in its homeland and now a wide DVD release in the UK courtesy of Metrodome Distribution.

The film focuses on five friends who go skiing at a remote mountain resort. When one of them becomes injured, the group is forced to seek shelter in the abandoned lodge buildings. It soon transpires that they are not alone.

This opens with a montage of TV footage and newspaper reports detailing searches for literally hundreds of missing skiers. We then meet our core group of characters before we are treated to some truly breathtaking scenery.

Atmospheric with some gorgeous overhead helicopter shots throughout, the locations are amazing, as is production design and the photography is similarly beautiful throughout. This film manages to be gritty without looking any less aesthetically pleasing.

There is quite a bit of blood and many wince inducing moments but these are achieved without ever having to be excessively gratuitous or gory. The cast are likeable and do good jobs and there is even some characterization going on here which is scarce in much of the genre’s similar efforts.

OVERALL SUMMARY
Cold Prey is not as terrifying or as gory as the critics would have you believe, but it is an extremely well made foreign slasher and one which I would highly recommend to genre fans.

Werewolf Women of the S.S Film

Rob Zombie has updated his blog with a simple question; "How many of you would like to see a full length movie of WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS?" The director has a three picture deal with Dimension, the first of them being the latest HALLOWEEN, which pulled in decent numbers for a low budgeted film (15 mil). We also know that Eli Roth will be releasing his TRAILER TRASH feature next summer.

In the end, the question may mean nothing but it seems that if he's asking, it's a good bet he has a financial backer (Dimension or someone else) for the project and he has a window in which he may direct it if the interest is high enough from his fanbase.

Here's the original trailer from the GRINDHOUSE film...

New Terminator 4 Plot Details!

Joblo reports:
After a lot of back and forth on Christian Bale's role in
TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS, CHUD are finally able to shine some light on the character and the plot. As it turns out, Bale's John Connor is NOT a major character in TERMINATOR SALVATION.

In fact they say he is "barely" in the script. The main character of SALVATION is Marcus, a "Riddick" like character who "was put 'out of commission' before the nuclear holocaust on Judgment Day and he wakes up about 15 years before the future we see in the original Terminator
films, which puts the movie at about 2015 or so." So why did producers say Bale was "the star?" Well it's all in semantics. They said, "John Connor is an ongoing, very central character throughout the next trilogy." And CHUD confirms that. Bale's Connor will be a much bigger role in parts 5 and 6 but in SALVATION, his role is minor.

First Casting For Saw V?!

Bloody Disgusting reports:

B-D have been tipped off that Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson and Costas Mandylor will all return in Lionsgate's Saw V, which is slated for release on October 24, 2007. Now here lies the problem... I have absolutely no way of confirming this news. In the past we've been scooped names (*cough*
Donnie Wahlberg) that have all been denied, only to be come a reality in the end. So take it for what it's worth, more flashback, a new future and more pain from Jigsaw and his creations. Watch for more updates as it comes in. Saw V will be directed by David Hackl off a script by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

American Zombie Coming Soon

Cinema Libre Studios alerted Fango that it will release Grace Lee’s undead mockumentary AMERICAN ZOMBIE to theaters next year, beginning with a New York debut March 28 to be followed by playdates in other cities.

The movie, which played this year’s Slamdance and South by Southwest festivals among others, has writer/director Lee and fellow non-fiction filmmaker John Solomon (playing themselves) setting out to capture the struggles of Revenants, i.e. high-functioning zombies, living and working in Los Angeles. Particular attention is paid to Joel, founder of ZAG (Zombie Advocacy Group), who devotes his unlife to achieving equal rights for the walking deceased and fighting the negative stereotypes created by
the movies and other media.

Sweatshop Cast Details & Pics!

Dread Central have followed up on their exclusive from last month on Stacey Davidson's latest horror effort Sweatshop. And now the world can see the official cast announcement and first pics of all the major players!

For those of you who may have seen Davidson’s first film, Domain of the Damned (aka Necrophobia), most of the cast for Sweatshop will seem familiar; starring in Sweatshop is Ashley Kay who, as Davidson puts it, "[had] so many bit appearances in "Domain" that she could literally be a drinking game." Kay plays the lead, Charlie...of course, knowing nothing about the plot it’s hard to tell you guys what that role entrails, but I can almost guarantee she’ll get bloody at some point.

Also returning from Domain are Naika Malveaux, Krystal Freeman and Brent D. Himes. Cast members from Mel House’s Closet Space are also part of Sweatshop, including Danielle Jones, Peyton Wetzel, Melanie Donihoo (the girl on the Closest Space poster).

"Of course no horror cast is complete without a maniacal, bloodthirsty murderer!" Davidson told Dread Central, "Filling the shoes of "The Beast" is Jeremy Sumrall, who many convention goers may know as proprietor of the horror merchandise boutique Necrobilia."

"These guys have been so much fun to work with, I sometimes have to remind myself that it is in fact work." Davidson admitted, "Be sure to say hi to the cast if you see them on the 2008 convention circuit! We're really looking forward to getting out there, meeting more horror fans, and showing the world the vision of insanity that is Sweatshop!"

You can start by making virtual friends with them at the official Sweatshop MySpace page.
