Laura Harris stars in this British horror movie about a young mother who may have given birth to the son of satan, and it is surprisingly good.
Whilst The Calling looks suspiciously like an updated version of ‘The Omen’ and shares more than a passing resemblance to ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, it is still a well scripted and acted chiller that did actually keep me guessing, and showcases some wince inducing scenes of violence to children and animals.
Set on the Isle of Mann, the film is well shot and beautifully lit which made the UK look far more beautiful than it normally appears.
Laura Harris manages to be likeable throughout and is supported by a fine cast including Alice Krige doing her best evil bitch turn to great effect.
Alex Roe Brown is suitably creepy in the role of Dylan…son of Satan and the film stands out from such recent films as ‘Godsend’ and ‘Bless the Child’ thanks to it’s broken narrative which allows plot points to be filled in via suitably graphic set pieces.
OVERALL SUMMARY
I didn’t have high expectations for this film as I’m getting a bit sick of immitators, but it certainly interested me, and why it hasn’t had a better release is beyond me as it is so much better than ‘Godsend’.
