I saw Hocus Pocus recently and whilst I obviously didn’t enjoy it as much as I did on first viewing (back when I was a kid), it still had enough humour and sass to make it an enjoyable flick.
The film begins in 1693 as the Sanderson sisters’ evil plans for immortality, are thwarted by young Salem boy Thackery Binx. The sisters are sentenced to death, but not before Binx is changed into a black cat. Flash forward to 1993 and teenager Max Dennison and his kid sister Dani move to Salem. On Halloween night (naturally) Max and Dani head to the Sanderson house and he accidentally reawakens the sisters. It’s up to Max and co to stop the wicked witches once and for all.
The film benefits from a strong cast, excellent costumes, great set design, musical numbers and a lot of laughs (thanks mainly to Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy).
OVERALL SUMMARY
Hocus Pocus makes for ideal family viewing for younger kids and adults alike on Halloween night. By the way, Sarah Jessica Parker is hot as a witch.
