Plot Summary:

"A sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl from a small island discovers there's a larger mystery to solve among the island's secretive, neo-pagan community."

Nicolas Cage stars as Edward Malus, a man haunted by the memory of a recent accident, who travels to an island known as Summersisle when he receives a letter from his long lost love telling him that her daughter is missing. What follows is the most hilarious remake I've seen since The Omen.

The film looks absolutely beautiful and has a very talented cast at its core but that's about the best compliment I can give it. Granted there are a number of new elements, some work, others don't, but the film is ultimately hampered by poor performances, dire dialogue and unintentional hilarity.

Some of the set pieces provide mild intrigue and were certainly capable of a little suspense, but they ultimately fall short of the mark.

OVERALL SUMMARY
The original film had intentional humour, but its bleak ending left a feeling of unease. The scariest thing here is Ellen Burstyn's Braveheart face paint and how hideous the majority of the usually beautiful cast looks. How dare they cut out renditions of The Landlord's Daughter and Willow's Song!
