Hitting Blu-ray and DVD both here in the UK and in America this week is John Gulager’s sequel to the 2010 boobs and bloodshed spectacular Piranha 3D.
The ‘plot’ involves Marine Biology student Maddy (played by the loveable Danielle Panabaker) returning home for summer only to find out that her sleazy step-dad Chet (Final Destination 5’s David Koechner) has turned the family owned water park in to a nudist water park replacing lifeguards with ‘water certified strippers’ and even installing a ‘cooch-cam’ so that people can watch the ladies in all their glory on plasma screens as they climb out of the pool. A quick money making scam involving the park’s water supply goes awry however and the bloodthirsty Piranha are let loose in the various pools within the park.
Whilst the first film was a total lolfest and an excuse for tonnes of nudity and gore, it also had some nice elements which helped to ground the story in reality such as the sub-plot with the two little kids stranded on the island. This lower budget sequel goes the other way completely and is all about the boobs and blood. This is no bad thing as the film is entertaining from start to finish and at a scant 82 minutes (five of which at least are devoted to bloopers during the end credits) it certainly doesn’t outstay its welcome.
Whilst this film had approximately one fifth the budget of the first film, Gulager has done a good job (which was the biggest surprise of all for me as I didn’t enjoy Feast and the sequel was one of the worst films I have ever seen) attracting a great cast and making a fun and great looking film. There’s some nice shots in this – especially a nice aerial reveal in the water park during the films climax.
OVERALL SUMMARY
If you enjoyed the first film for what it was you’ll surely get a kick out of this.
