For years we have always seen cheap imitations of big budget films on video store shelves, and it doesn’t take much thought to realise which movie this film is imitating, especially when it does an almost shot for shot remake of the better film’s opening scene.
If you read other reviews of Psycho Cop you will see that it normally falls under the category of so bad it’s good and for the most part I would agree with this judgement.
The plot can be described in a single sentence; a group of 6 friends take a trip to a country resort only to end up being stalked by a psycho cop.
The film looks good which implies that it had high production values, but the story and the majority of the acting are terrible and this also has some of the worst dialogue that I have ever heard.
There are blatant errors such as a scene where the gang stop what they are doing because they are sure that they heard someone screaming, despite the fact that the guy didn’t scream, or the scene where a girl sees someone walk past the bathroom window even though the bathroom is on the second floor.
Similarly, people walk in and out of shot asking questions which in reality people couldn’t possibly know the answers to, but they are able to answer due to the poorly thought out script.
Characters repeatedly wander alone outside in places such as the shed looking for their toothbrushes and purses despite the fact that they had never even been near the buildings, and one character is lured into the woods because someone takes her tacky plastic hairbrush.
The actors constantly repeat each others lines and talk over each other which makes me wonder if this was an excercise in improv or if it was a horror spoof that was just way ahead of its time.
The deaths all suck and every single plot point in the movie defies logic, but if you can let it go I’m sure you will enjoy it.
the titular character is truly a freak but he wasn’t really scary, he just freaked me out a bit and his actions are explained in one disposable sentence.
OVERALL SUMMARY
Absolutely cringeworthy!! Bad acting and a script that has no logic in it at all make for a truly cruddy horror movie, but it does actually look good for the majority of the runtime, and has one good jump scare that I didn’t see coming. It might not be anywhere as good as the film it tries to imitate but it is hilarious as a comedy, I’m just not sure what the intentions behind it were.
