Sonya Salomaa

Sonya: "It was my first time as a Vampire".

Conducted by Phil Davies Brown
April 18th, 2006

I don't know about you guys, but one of the first things I noticed when watching House of the Dead was this funky little lady. At the time, most horror fans probably assumed that the young actress was destined to star in a string of cheap boobs and blood movies, yet she has grown as an artist and went on to take the TV world by storm, winning an award and even replacing Carly Pope on the recently cancelled show The Collector.

Read on to find out more about this charming rising talent, as she reveals all about her thoughts regarding House of the Dead, working with Uwe Boll and the challenges she faced being nail gunned to a wall and axed to death in her latest horror movie The Tooth Fairy.

SONYA WILL BE SEEN IN THE UPCOMING LIFETIME MOVIES "THE TIES THAT BIND", AND "THE STRANGER GAME". ALSO KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR HER RECURRING ROLE ON THE ABC FAMILY SERIES "KYLE XY" AS WELL AS AN UPCOMING EPISODE OF "STARGATE SG-1" WHERE SHE ONCE AGAIN TAKES ON THE ROLE OF CHAROLETTE MAYFIELD. AND FINALLY, YOU CAN SEE SONYA STARRING IN THE FEATURE FILM "THE BLACK EYED DOG" THIS FALL ON THE BIG SCREEN!

You can view the trailer for The Tooth Fairy (as well as trailers for Voodoo Moon, Room 6 and All Souls Day) here.

You worked extensively for a number of years on many high profile TV shows before appearing in an episode of Glory Days. What was that like to work on?
GLORY DAYS WAS A GREAT ROLE TO PLAY. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME AS A VAMPIRE! IT WAS REALLY EMPOWERING AND FUN TO PLAY SUCH AN INTIMIDATING CHARACTER. IT WAS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST TIMES THAT I GOT TO DO MY OWN STUNTS WHICH WAS REALLY COOL AS WELL. THEY HAD ME RIGGED UP FROM A TREE ABOUT 20 FEET OFF OF THE GROUND SO THAT I COULD DROP UPSIDE DOWN INTO FRAME. VERY COOL...ALTHOUGH I ALMOST PASSED OUT A COUPLE OF TIMES!!!

Your first horror film was Uwe Boll's House of the Dead which wasn't well received by many fans or critics. Did you audition for the role of Cynthia or did Uwe like you better for this part?
YES, I DID HAVE TO AUDITION FOR THE ROLE. IT WAS MY VERY FIRST LEAD IN A FEATURE AND I HAD ONLY BEEN ACTING FOR A VERY SHORT TIME.

What was Uwe like to work with?
UWE WAS A VERY NICE MAN. HE WAS DEFINITELY A MAN OF VERY FEW WORDS, BUT YOU CERTAINLY KNEW IF HE WASN'T HAPPY WITH A TAKE!

Sonya: "You certainly knew if he wasn't happy with a take!".

Did you enjoy working with such a great cast of rising talents?
THAT WAS BY FAR THE BEST PART OF THE FILM. WE ALL BECAME CLOSE FRIENDS AND ARE TO THIS DAY. NO EGOS, JUST A REALLY NICE GROUP OF PEOPLE!

What were your thoughts on the finished film?
EVERYBODY HAS THEIR "LEPRECHAUNS" OR THEIR "ATTACK OF THE KILLER GREEN TOMATO'S"....YOU KNOW?

You are well known for playing Maya on The Collector. Did you feel pressure to take over the role from Carly Pope?
ABSOLUTELY! CARLY IS A WONDERFUL ACTRESS AND HAS MANY LOYAL FANS THAT I KNEW WHERE NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY THAT SHE WAS GONE. BUT, ALL YOU CAN DO IS DO THE BEST YOU CAN AND I THINK THAT I WAS EVENTUALLY ACCEPTED INTO THE ROLE AND MADE IT MY OWN.

Do you enjoy working with Chris Kramer?
CHRIS AND I ARE TWO OF THE BIGGEST NERDS TO EVER WORK TOGETHER! HE IS TRULY LIKE A BROTHER TO ME NOW AND HE MADE COMING TO WORK EVERY DAY GREAT FUN! THERE IS NO POMPOUSNESS WITH KRAMER, HE WOULD JUST GO IN THERE AND GET THE JOB DONE! EVERYONE ON THE SHOW REALLY BECAME A CLOSE KNIT FAMILY OVER THE YEARS!

There are rumours circulating that the show has been cancelled, are you able to comment on this for the fans?
YES, UNFORTUNATELY THE SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED. IT IS REALLY A SHAME NOT ONLY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE ANY CLOSURE FOR THE CHARACTERS BUT IT WAS ALSO A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR MANY FABULOUS CANADIAN ACTORS TO REALLY BRING TO LIFE SOME AMAZING ROLES AND SHOWCASE OUR TALENT. I THINK WE WERE REALLY DEVELOPING A VERY LOYAL FAN BASE AS WELL....OH WELL, THAT’S HOW THIS BUSINESS GOES!

Sonya: "Horror Movies are always a bit ridiculous to shoot".

You will soon be seen in The Tooth Fairy. How did you enjoy working on the film? Do you know if it will be similar to Darkness Falls?
I HAVEN'T SEEN IT.

You again worked with many great talents on that film. Do you have any funny stories you could share with us about the shoot?
HORROR MOVIES ARE ALWAYS A BIT RIDICULOUS TO SHOOT. WHEN MY TIME COMES TO AN END IN THE MOVIE I WAS LITERALLY NAIL GUNNED TO A WALL AND AXED TO DEATH.....NOW THERE ARE VERY FEW REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES TO DRAW ON AS AN ACTOR TO REALLY GET INTO THAT MOMENT....BUT HEY IT’S ALL ABOUT SUBSTITUTION. ANYHOO...EVERYONE WAS GREAT TO WORK WITH. STEVE BASIC IS AN OLD FRIEND OF MINE SO IT WAS GREAT TO GOOF AROUND WITH HIM AGAIN. ALSO, CHUCK BOWMAN IS A LOVELY, PATIENT AND WONDERFUL DIRECTOR TO WORK WITH.

I see you have also worked with Brendan Fletcher on Black Eyed Dog. What was Brendan like to work with?
BRENDAN'S A LITTLE PUNK!! I SWEAR TO GOD....NO I'M JUST KIDDING...WELL NOT REALLY, HE'S A PUNK IN ALL THE BEST WAYS, LIKE A LITTLE BRO TO ME. I ACTUALLY ADORE HIM. HE'S A REALLY GREAT FREEKIN ACTOR. NOTHING LIKE SHOOTING A MOVIE IN A REALLY SMALL CANADIAN LOBSTER TOWN TO REALLY GET TO KNOW SOMEBODY!

Canada has been the destination of choice for horror movies of late, are you a fan of horror movies and can we expect to see you in any more?
I HAVE NO PROBLEM BEING IN HORROR MOVIES, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO BE IN MORE OF A PSYCHOLOGICAL STYLE HORROR FILM THAT KEEPS YOU GUESSING AND ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT, NOT BLOOD AND GUTS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF THE GORE. OH WHO AM I KIDDING...I JUST NEED A JOB; MY SERIES WAS CANCELLED FOR PETES SAKE!!!!!

What's next for Sonya Salomaa?
I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT!

"Thank you ever so much for taking part in this interview Sonya.
And we wish you the very best of luck in the future."
