Tanja Reichart

Tanja: "I scare really easy.".

Conducted by Phil Davies Brown
March 31st, 2004

This week, I had the pleasure of chatting to Tanja Reichart, who I'm sure you will have seen in any number of movies over the years. Tanja is currently appearing on cinema screens in 'Club Dread'. Read on to see what we can expect from the movie, when it finally makes it's way to UK screens.

Why did you want to become an actress?
When I was in high school a friend of mine was acting in a youth theatre. Hearing all the exciting stories made me want to join the same theatre. From there I got an agent. The more I worked and learned the more I enjoyed acting. When I was in college I realized I wanted to focus solely on acting.

I first saw you in the movie Perfect Little Angels with Brendan Fehr. How did you hear about the project and what was it like to work on?
My agent submitted me for the movie, I actually read for the lead female role Justine. I didn't get that part but, they ended up casting me as her friend. It was a pleasure to work on; everyone in the cast was very cool.

You were also in Fallen Angel, it has been some time since I saw the movie but I seem to recall that it was a very similar story to Valentine which starred Denise Richards and David Boreanaz. Can you refresh my memory and tell me what that experience was like for you?
It was quite a few years ago, we shot it in Montréal. To be honest, I haven't even seen the movie.

You have appeared in such series as Millennium, Poltergeist: The Legacy and Beyond Belief is making genre TV really different to making genre movies?
In movies there is generally more time to get everything done, depending on budget of course. Making shows of the same genre for television, much of it is fighting time. Trying to get it all done, sometimes shots are sacrificed.

Beyond Belief was a few years ago also, and I haven't had the chance to see that yet either.

Tanja starring in Scary Movie.

I definitely remember seeing you in Scary Movie. Was it as much fun to make as it was to watch?
Definitely, those guys are a blast; it wasn't really like going to work at all.

What was Shannon Elizabeth like to work with?
Great.

What are your opinions on the other two Scary Movie films? I think the first one is still the best!
I agree fully.

You were also in Sanctimony which was directed by Uwe Boll, who seems to do nothing but turn video games into movies as of late. What was Uwe like to work with, and do you feel that the criticism he receives is unfair?
Uwe was great to work with, I am unaware of the criticism he receives.

Now I must ask you about a project that I first heard about years ago. A Fate Totally Worse Than Death. Firstly can you tell us a little about the story?
Fate Totally Worse Than Death is about a group of pretty popular girls who accidentally kill a rival while trying to scare her. Subsequently the three girls start to rapidly age prematurely hence the title. What could be worse for pretty high school girls?

Do you know if the film is finished or if it has been released in any countries yet?
As of now the film hasn't been released, I think the production company (The Bubble Factory) went under. Which is too bad.

Was it a fun project to work on?
Totally, I had a toilet plunger suctioned to my face.

The cast included Julie Benz, Monica Keena, the late Jonathan Brandis and even Janet Leigh!! That's an excellent cast!! What were they all like to work with?
Everyone was super cool.

Would you care to comment on the recent tragedy concerning Jonathan Brandis?
I feel horrible, I had no idea, I saw him at an audition last year. What actually happened?
It was reported in November 2003 that Jonathan Brandis commited suicide.

Tanja: "I had a toilet plunger
suctioned to my face.".

You are currently starring in Club Dread, which is still awaiting release here in the UK. Can you tell us a bit about your part?
I play Kellie, one of the employees at the resort. She is only working there to have a good time.

Is the film similar in tone to Scary Movie? I've heard that Club Dread is actually quite scary and bloody as well as funny.
It does parody the genre but it is in the genre as well. It is all those things, funny, scary and bloody.

What were the cast like?
Again, it was like going on a vacation. Too much fun to be called work, it was really like being at a resort. (Oh yeah, we were at a resort).

Are you a fan of the horror genre?
I scare really easy.

All of the movies you've been in are never straight horror; would you like to do a really scary movie like Wrong Turn or Texas Chainsaw Massacre?
I would love to play a complex character like a killer.

Finally, what are you working on next?
A film called Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang with Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr.

"Thanks ever so much Tanja for taking part in this interview.
We wish you the best of luck in the future."
