Adam Wingard’s ‘You’re Next’ will be hitting UK theatres on 28 August and putting all the emphasis on the term ‘the home of horror’. And whilst Lionsgate prepare to unleash their home invasion thriller we’re reminded of some of the more terrifying home invasion horrors in recent years. Strange noises coming from outside your bedroom window and bangs and creaking occurring whilst you’re tucked up in bed at night is enough to send shivers down the spine of any resident. And even when you know the layout of your home better than your mysterious and uninvited guests when it comes to the sub-genre the attackers nearly always have the upper hand.
Sharni Vinson in ‘You’re Next’Whether it’s serial killers, gangs of thugs, murderous psychotics or even aliens the concept of having your sweet abode interrupted and disrupted by the outside world leaves a sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach. And it’s an even more terrifying feeling when the assailant’s very motives are unknown. Much like the masked antagonists in Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion feature ‘The Strangers’ whose simple response to the question “Why are you doing this to us?” was “Because you were home”.
The trailer for ‘You’re Next’ introduces us to the Davison family and their enviable happy American family life, beautifully toned with the sounds of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day playing in the background. But this is horror and in one moment everything changes when a group of animal masked attackers bare down on the homestead looking for bloodshed. But this is no random attack and the invasive invaders appear to be right at home executing their plans and everyone inside. And it leaves us the begging questions. Will the hunters become the hunted? And what exactly are their motives? All will be revealed when ‘You’re Next’ opens here in the UK only in theatres from 28 August.
