Despite the strong film line-up on show, including the special presentation of Hellraiser II: Hellbound in conjunction with the BFI Gothic series, day 3 at Grimmfest 2013 was all about the people. From allowing the audience to vote on which film in the Hellraiser series was screened the organisers had laid on some fantastic dark treats for their enthusiastic Grimmlins. At fringe location Lass O’Gowrie SFX legend Shaune Harrison delivered a make-up masterclass which included the creation of a zombie before an excited and only mildly infected full house. While recounting stories from his time in the movies including heading up the zombie team on the recent World War Z Shaune transformed one lucky Grimmlin into a fully fledged member of the undead, for the remainder of the day at least.
Over at The Dancehouse later that evening Shaune took part in a Q & A where a career that has taken in films including the Harry Potter franchise to Star Wars via the aforementioned Hellraiser series was discussed. This was an unmissable event with Shaune a open and honest speaker on everything from decapitations in Sleepy Hollow to creating the final look for Voldemort.
For many fans the Hellraiser films hold a special, revered place in the lexicon of horror and Grimmfest 2013 organisers have given audiences a wonderful opportunity to meet two of the stars. Barbie Wilde (Female Cenobite from Hellbound) and Nicholas Vince (Chatterer from Hellraiser and Hellbound) were engaging and entertaining in equal measure as they told stories from their time on Clive Barker’s infamous creation and answered many questions from an eager and knowledgeable audience.
At the half way point Grimmfest 2013 shows no sign of letting up and with some extraordinary films scheduled for the weekend including Kiss Of The Damned, Big Bad Wolves and The Machine the horror just goes on and on.
