FANGO PACTS WITH CHILLER THEATRE
FANGORIA magazine has joined forces with Kevin Clements Chiller Theatre to produce all future editions of FANGORIAs Weekend of Horrors conventions. The first Fango/Chiller show will take place January 9-11, 2004, at the Meadowlands Sheraton in East Rutherford, NJ.
Though we have had a long and fruitful relationship with our friends at Creation, we felt it was time for a change, says Fango editor Tony Timpone, who will be producing the shows with Clement. We want to bring our conventions to more people than ever before and to open the events in more U.S. cities. An association with Chiller Theatre and Kevin promises to bring us more vendors, more guests, more customers and more fun. Our first East Coast show in January will also mark the first three-day Weekend of Horrors, and we will be rolling back ticket prices to only $12 per day in advance. This wont be just another Chiller or Fango show, but an exciting opportunity to marshal forces to create the greatest live horror fan event ever.
As a fan, I really enjoyed attending the Fango shows back when they started in the mid-80s, says Clement, who will continue to run his biannual Chiller Theatre New Jersey conventions each spring and fall, sans Fango. It was an inspiration to me to see so many people into one genre having a blast, and thats one of the reasons my Chiller Theatre expos started up. As time went on, Fango had the best show out there for the gore crowd, and Chiller started bringing in the classic 50s horror and science fiction crowd. We both had the best of our respective worlds to bring to the fans, and they loved it.
Over the years, weve heard that Fango is the best, Chiller is the best, Fango has better guests, Chiller has better vendors, and so on, Clement continues. The truth is that we both have devoted legions of fans and attendees, and we both try to bring the best show that we can to them! Over the past couple of years, Tony and I have been talking about possibly teaming up, and when you really sit down and think about it, what could be a better than to merge the two together and come up with a event that will rock the convention world?!
Early plans for the new and improved January Weekend of Horrors include a reunion of casts and crew from all 10 FRIDAY THE 13TH films and the women of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series; a FANGORIA short film competition (details to follow); a Saturday-night horror rock show with Chiller faves The Dead Elvi; guests and/or footage from such upcoming films as DAWN OF THE DEAD, VAN HELSING, HELLBOY, SPIDER-MAN 2, GODSEND, the HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES sequel, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, CURSED, etc.; and lots more to be announced.
No matter how you feel about both conventions, one thing remains solid, and thats the fact that both Tony and I love what were doing and we do it from the heart, Clement says. Sometimes, things go off in different directions than planned on, but if your hearts into it, the final results will be amazing! We are going to bring the horror convention up to a new level, and Tony is right in saying that this will be the greatest teamup in horror since Jason and Freddy!
