In 2017 actor Hugh Jackman will be seen one final time sporting his overly pointy hairdo and claws as Marvel’s iconic superhero Wolverine. It will mark the ninth time that the Aussie star has played the role and the yet untitled Wolverine sequel will no doubt see him out with a bang. In spite of his good intentions Wolverine has always still been a bit of an intimidating figure and not just to the villains he battles. I most definitely wouldn’t like to meet him down a dark alley but there are certainly a number of other truly terrifying characters that exist in the Marvel universe. So here is our rundown of the scariest Marvel comic characters.
1. VERMIN
Vermin is a cannibalistic humanoid rat and this sewer-dwelling swine is one of the more disgusting and vile villains in our list. Looking beyond his faecal covered fur and the smell that seems to emanate right off the pages he has quite a disturbing past which includes sexual and physical abuse as a child. This sick little rat-faced bastard first appeared in 1982 in an edition of Captain America and can even control rats (much like the movie character ‘Willard’ (1971)). Vermin is also responsible for kidnapping a number of women taking them in to the sewers where he then murders and eats them!
2. THANOS
After first appearing in Iron Man (issue #55) back in 1973 Thanos soon solidified himself as one of the more terrifying figures in the Marvel universe. This dangerous mass murdering alien life form is responsible for some of the most abhorrent crimes in the universe including the genocide of his entire race. Thanos was able to collect all six of the fabled Infinity Gems which gave him unlimited power to inflict all sorts of evil of his enemies including the Avengers team (portrayed here in some cool watercolour Avengers art).
3. GALACTUS
The planet eating goliath that is Galactus has been devouring worlds since the beginning of time and is the most feared and the most powerful of absolutely everyone in the Marvel universe. This god-like figure first appeared all the way back in 1966 in the Fantastic Four comic book series and his origins were not revealed for another 3 years when the world masticator popped up in the pages of Thor.
4. VENOM
Also known as Venom Symbiote this supervillain is actually an amorphous extraterrestrial parasite that quite literally takes over the form of whoever it manages to latch on to. Typically Venom takes on a human host and then bonds with both its hosts body and mind becoming an incredibly powerful foe. His first host was that of Spider-Man who was strong willed enough to reject the influential goo and eventually found its way to journalist Eddie Brock.
5. RED SKULL
Even if Red Skull didn’t have any of the intelligence or strength he often portrays by simply wandering around looking the way he does is menacing enough to have us running in the opposite direction. Think of him as a super-Nazi who was Hitler’s protégé and has since gone on to do everything he can, including epic battles against Captain America, in order to reach his ambitious plans of world domination.
