Jan Philip Cramer is no stranger to working on blockbusters, but his success with Avengers: Infinity War is a new high. Cramer is the head of animation at Digital Domain, a major visual effects and digital production company. Digital Domain has been at the forefront of visual effects since 1993. Throughout his career, Cramer has also amassed credit for his work in many other well-known films, including Avatar, Ender’s Game, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, and Spiderman: Homecoming.

Cramer is an alumnus of the Academy of Art University, a private art and design school in San Francisco that was founded in 1929. The university is the largest of its kind in the United States, and it boasts several other notable alumni, such as Rick Baker (who currently holds the record number of Academy Awards for Best Makeup). The Academy of Art University offers associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in 25 subjects, some of which are also offered online.

Cramer attributes much of his success to his alma mater, which he graduated from in 2004. In 2011, the university granted him the Emerging Artist Alumni Award. He has praised his teachers for their first-hand understanding of the animation industry, commenting that their input helped him refine his skills and direct his career.

His praise is unsurprising, since the Academy of Art University prides itself on having instructors that are current professionals in their fields. The school promotes high standards of quality and ethics. It also vaunts its urban location in San Francisco, which is a fantastic resource for professors. The university gives back to the community in multiple ways, such as hosting art shows and working with other organizations in the city.

One of the school’s emphases that Cramer particularly remembers is its general education program. According to the university’s mission statement, this program not only fulfills the more common goal of developing critical thinking and communication skills, but also urges young artists to discover new ways of viewing their work. By presenting various viewpoints from history and the world, professors train students to expand their creativity to a global context.

The university has a 100% admissions policy; an unusual rule for a school with a reputation for excellence. It believes that all students who love art and desire to pursue higher learning should have the opportunity to do so. This policy derives from its founder, Richard S. Stephens, who argued that good teaching and determination can transform any artist into a professional. It has found great success in encouraging each student to develop his or her individual style, resulting in a diverse output of work.

Cramer looks forward to even more success in the next few years. His upcoming projects, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, are likely to hit theaters with a bang. Many other alumni of the university join him in anticipating great careers, as they have received recognition at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The university’s Schools of Animation & Visual Effects and Motion Pictures & Television are especially proficient at producing renowned artists.

Cramer’s story is inspiring to others working in artistic fields, especially current students at his alma mater. Their education opens up similar doors, provided that they are ready to pursue their careers with the same dedication and commitment to excellence.
