CHAINSAW CARVES OUT BIG OPENING
New Line’s remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was a roaring success its first weekend, as various sources are reporting an estimated $29.1-million gross for the film’s first three days. (The actual total will be reported Monday afternoon.) The tally was above New Line’s prerelease projections and stands as the second-best October opening ever, after the $36.5 million notched by RED DRAGON last year. It also marks the fourth R-rated horror film to top the box office in the past couple of months, following New Line’s FREDDY VS. JASON (which was #1 for two weekends), MGM’s JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 and Screen Gems’ UNDERWORLD. Hopefully, this will shatter the prevalent recent thinking that hardcore R-rated fare isn’t as commercially viable as PG-13 product.
