GOTHIKA BREAKS DARK CASTLE RECORD
Looks like delaying GOTHIKA from its originally planned Halloweentime release has paid off for Warner Bros. Various sources report that the Mathieu Kassovitz-directed supernatural thriller, which no doubt got a box-office boost from the presence of star Halle Berry, grossed an estimated $19.6 million in its first three days (final figures will be released Monday afternoon), coming in second for the weekend after THE CAT IN THE HAT. That gives GOTHIKA the biggest opening session of the four chillers produced so far by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis’ Dark Castle Entertainment, beating out 1999’s HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL ($15.9 million its first weekend), 2001’s 13 GHOSTS ($15.1 million) and last year’s GHOST SHIP ($11.5 million).
