DOUG WICK TALKS BEWITCHED
FANGORIA caught up with producer Doug (THE CRAFT) Wick over the weekend and chatted about his upcoming return to witchcraft with a big screen version of the popular sixties television series, BEWITCHED, set to star Nicole Kidman (‘Yes, she can wiggle her nose like that,’ jokes Wick’s co-producer Lucy Fisher) and possibly, Will Ferrell as Darrin.
‘We worked for a really long time or I should say, we failed for a really long time on this one trying to get a version that had new life,’ enthuses Wick. ‘Why make it unless you have a real idea? And Nora Ephron came up with a fantastic way to make it work. Turned it on its ear, but got the best part of the story. So, there’ll be lots of magic, but it won’t be swamped by magic. She’s got a great character-comedy premise. The guy who is going to play Darrin – which we haven’t quite closed yet – when you get who Darrin is with Nicole, you’ll just get the whole movie.’
Though Nora Ephron is probably the last person you’d imagine would be mentioned in a FANGORIA.com news story, it was her take that kicked off this witchy project. ‘She came to a way why it exists now, so it’s contemporary, though there will be other characters – Dr. Bombay, Uncle Arthur, her father,’ Wick continues. ‘Nora Ephron is such a smart writer, so there’s where it got exciting for us. We kept circling it and circling it and then she really came up with this fantastic idea and we’ll start shooting in July.’
