LEATHERFACE NOT SCHIZOPHRENIC!
A small controversy has brewed up over the release of the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake in Greece, according to Yahoo! News. The film is being released there under a title that translates to THE SCHIZOPHRENIC CHAINSAW KILLER, and that has Greek psychiatrists up in arms. In a joint statement, the heads of three psychiatric groups protested, ‘The title has no relation to the English title, the protagonist of the movie is not suffering from schizophrenia and so it is insulting and demeaning to those suffering from it. The Greek title reproduces the stereotype that everyone suffering from schizophrenia is violent and dangerous.’
Reportedly, the Greek distributor has agreed to add a disclaimer to the beginning of the movie noting that Leatherface is not, in fact, schizophrenic. (Whew!) Interestingly, both Tobe Hooper’s original CHAINSAW and his first sequel to the movie have also played in Greece with SCHIZOPHRENIC in the title, though apparently no protests were lodged against them.
