CEMETERY GATES FILMING BEGINS
Production began last week on Graveyard Filmworks CEMETERY GATES, which follows on the heels of Anthony Ferrantes just-wrapped BOO, the companys first effort. The film is being helmed by SOTA FX chief Roy Knyrim, who recently made his directorial debut on DEMONS AT THE DOOR (see Fango #229). As previously reported CEMETERY GATES revolves around a genetically altered creature (described as a Tasmanian Devil-like critter) that gets loose underneath the titular locale where some college kids are partying.
‘The creature itself looks pretty good,’ reports the films star, New York actor Peter Stickles. ‘Its about 8 feet tall with a fully animatronic head. I spent a good amount of time in the workshop with the guys building it before we started filming. They had to test out some of the bloodier special effects on someone, and that was me! I got my arm ripped off, my stomach sliced open and had all my guts spill out! I was absolutely covered in blood by the end of the day. Roy just kept yelling, More blood! It was shooting about 3 feet out of me every time! I also had to wrestle around with the creature a lot, having it tackle me and shred me up and bite me and things like that.’
SOTA FX is handling CEMETERY GATES monster magic, while a PHANTASM favorite and two familiar makeup masters will be appearing in the film as well. ‘Reggie Bannister is playing my dad,’ Stickles tells Fango. ‘Weve been having fun just hanging out together. The guys from KNB EFXthe N and the B [Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger]are playing two stoner dudes who are eventually killed by the beast. And Richard Elfman [Dannys brother and Jennas uncle] plays a haggard old fisherman that runs into the creature.’ Elfman previously cameoed as monster bait in DEMONS AT THE DOOR.
