Kate Beckinsale just can’t get enough Vampire action can she? Announced by Variety is that Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are in fact planning a sequel to Kate Beckinsale (Van Helsing) and Scott Speedman’s Werewolf vs Vampire flick, Underworld. The script is due in April with a Fall start planned for the sequel, which should deal with the awakening if a powerful Vampire/Werewolf. Read on for details.
Variety reports that Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment will partner on a sequel that is set for a fall start, with Kate Beckinsale reprising her role as Selene, the blood-sucking heroine who found herself in a loving relationship with a werewolf. Scott Speedman, who played the latter role, is also expected to return. Len Wiseman will be back as director. Danny McBride will have the script ready by early April.
Beckinsale followed the original ‘Underworld’ by again haunting the horror genre, and co-starring with Hugh Jackman in the Steve Sommers-directed ‘Van Helsing.’ She also played Ava Gardner in the Martin Scorsese-directed ‘The Aviator.’
Bought as a spec script that was hatched by Wiseman and McBride, ‘Underworld’ was shot for $24 million, grossed $51 million domestically and has performed well on DVD/video. Screen Gems prexy Clint Culpepper and Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi felt the pic performed well enough for an encore, but the real impetus was the continuing enthusiasm of Wiseman and McBride.
‘Underworld’ is the second sequel for the 4-year-old company, which just wrapped ‘Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse.’
