DAWN CHEWS UP BOX OFFICE
Various sources have reported that Universal’s DAWN OF THE DEAD remake opened to a better-than-expected, $27.3-million weekend box-office estimate, easily topping the chart and pushing the previously reigning (and equally bloody) THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST to second place. DAWN’s figure is about equivalent to the $28-million opening gross last fall of the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE redux (which debuted on about 70 more screens, and wound up with just over $80 million), and sets a new record for zombie movies, topping the $17.7 million raked in by RESIDENT EVIL’s opening session. Comparisons to the original DAWN are hard to make because no solid box-office figures exist for that film, though it should be noted that the new DAWN made more in its first day than the entire $5.8-million gross of the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD remake in 1990.
