HORROR TV IS ALIVE!
It’s American to have to healthy competitors working to better themselves in order to make more money than the other guy, but are two horror channels going to be too much of a good thing? Doubtful!
Really Scary got some info that was apparently overlooked by pretty much everyone else out there in horror site land. Seems that Silver Pictures and Orchid Ventures are currently working on building a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week horror channel called The Scream Channel, to be launched in the U.S. January of 2005.
Dark Castle Entertainment is already working on creating new, original content for the channel, and producer Joel Sliver (of both Silver Pictures and DC) says there will be a night dedicated to Dark Castle films. They are currently in talks with two other studios to license their respective libraries of horror films.
It doesn’t sound too bad, and it’s got some good names attached to it, but unlike The Horror Channel that we’ve been discussing here, The Scream Channel reeks to me of corporate opportunism. They see the success of horror in recent months at the box office, and decide to move ahead with an idea that I’m sure has been sitting around for while. But is there really any love for the genre behind it? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
But wait! There’s more!
A UK reader by the name of Stuart dropped Creature Corner a line this weekend to let us know that the UK is getting a brand new horror channel, as well…starting today!
The channel is also called The Horror Channel, and it launches today as a free-to-view Sky channel, broadcasting between 6pm and 6am. Eventually they say they want it to be 24 hours a day, but 12 is a pretty good start if you ask me.
UK horror fans, or those just curious about it in the States, can check out The Horror Channel’s website right here for a lot more info.
