ALTERED STATES BEING REMADE?
Variety reports that Warner Bros. is developing a remake of ALTERED STATES, the 1980 Ken Russell-directed sci-fi horror film based on Paddy Chayefsky’s novel. In that movie, scripted by Chayefsky (who adopted the pseudonym ‘Sidney Aaron’ after Russell altered the state of his work), William Hurt plays a scientist whose experiments in sensory deprivation cause him to revert to a primitive form of humanity. For the redux, producer Greg Shapiro told the trade, ‘[We] will look to the future and the evolution of consciousness and its various levels.’ He also stated, rather ominously, ‘The original is a cult film where people love the idea but can’t totally digest the film.’ The scripter on the project is Fernley Phillips, who also penned the J-horror remake TURN for Paramount, Radar Pictures and director Marcus Nispel.
