KELLY CLEARS UNHALLOWED GROUND
At the recent Horrorfind Weekend in Maryland, Fango spoke to New York filmmaker Alan Rowe Kelly, whose ILL BURY YOU TOMORROW was recently released on DVD by Heretic Films, and who is now working on his second feature, UNHALLOWED GROUND. Its about a young man who suddenly inherits an abandoned hotel thats attached to 20 acres of fairy-tale land, with enlarged versions of storybook characters for kids, Kelly explains. Once he discovers this property, he finds out its haunted, and its alive, and its hungry. It has a lot to do with a Celtic sect, the Dhim-Mahn-Bae-Hae, and its going to be completely different from ILL BURY YOU TOMORROW; Im gonna go for a more supernatural, cultlike edge on this film instead.
Kelly adds that his occult creatures are based on real Celtic legend. Theyre specters that live in the fog, he explains, so when youre not looking, the fog people come out and grab you and take you away. But will their mayhem result in the same kind of bloodshed as that seen in ILL BURY YOU TOMORROW? I certainly hope so! Kelly laughs. I think it should be. I dont know if its going to be as bloody, because most of the murders and the deaths are going to occur through nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Everything coming out of the ground is going to course into the storybook forest, and everything will get very disjointed from there as far as how things come out to get people.
The filmmaker, who hopes to raise a budget in the mid-hundred-thousands for this feature, already has it mostly cast up. Im bringing back [TOMORROWs] Zoe Daelman Chlanda, Jerry Murdock and Katherine OSullivanplus myself, Ill be appearing as a sort of shifty real estate agent, basically. I also have Jeff Dylan [DEAD & ROTTING] Graham, whos really into it, and Joshua Nelson from STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN AT SUNDOWN. And Felissa Rose [with whom Kelly co-stars in Joe Sullivan and Michael Heins film DEAD SERIOUS] is definitely interested too. Hopefully, if budget and schedule and time permits, Im gonna try to maybe get Yvette Vickers or Mara Corday or someone like that to come back for a bit role.
Currently, Kelly is seeking financing, a task that he reports is absolutely not any easier despite the positive response to TOMORROW. It was so weird, the way financing fell together for that; it was so easy for some reason. Now that Im actually going ahead with another feature, of course I want to step up a level, and this is a whole new thing for me, going in to certain companies and people who back features and produce horror movies. Heretic has shown some interest, and Ive had interest from some other people. Even some people over at Raw Nerve are going to look at the scriptI mean, it doesnt mean anything, but one of the gentlemen over there showed a keen interest in ILL BURY YOU TOMORROW, so as soon as Im finished, Im going to submit UNHALLOWED GROUND to him, and hopefully between him and Eli [Roth] and Scott [Spiegel] and Boaz [Yakin], maybe theyll want to help me along with it.
