WAR OF THE WORLDS CASTING
Variety reports that Dakota Fanning is going to war with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg in Paramount/DreamWorks’ ‘War of the Worlds.’
Fanning will portray the daughter of Cruise’s character in the production, which is being fast-tracked to start shooting in November.
‘War of the Worlds,’ a contempo adaptation of the 1898 H.G. Wells novel about aliens invading the Earth, is being prepped for a 2005 release. David Koepp wrote the script; Kathleen Kennedy and Cruise’s long-time producing partner Paula Wagner will produce.
Fanning recently joined DreamWorks’ equine drama ‘Dreamer’ opposite Kurt Russell. Production starts Sept. 14 with shooting set for Lexington, Ky., and Covington, La. She recently appeared in ‘Man on Fire’ and will be seen next in ‘Hide and Seek.’
The 1938 radio performance of ‘War of the Worlds’ by Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater ignited a nationwide panic among listeners who didn’t realize it was fiction. The book also inspired a 1953 film starring Gene Barry and Les Tremayne.
