GUNNAR ANSWERS CHAINSAW REMAKERS
You dont want to make Leatherface mad, so when Gunnar Hansen wrote to Fangoria to dispute something hed seen on their website, we were sure to give him his say. ‘I just read the article on the new CHAINSAW movie on your website,’ the actor begins. ‘In it, one of the producers says that, as much as they wanted me in the new CHAINSAW, it didnt happen because I wanted 15, 20 grand for one day!
‘This is not true,’ he continues. ‘They did ask me to be in the movie and I was interested. But they offered me union minimum for the day. I said that this was unacceptably little, to which the casting associate said that they were not using any name-brand actorsnot trueand that everyone had agreed to do it for scalenot likely. Even though I turned down their offer, I never mentioned an amount that I wanted, other than to say that it would have to be more than mimimum scale. They declined to offer more. I guess that with only a $9-million budget, paying me something more than $650 would have been just too costly.
‘What angers me about that remark,’ Hansen adds, ‘was that it was gratuitous. He didnt need to say anything about why I wasnt in the movie. But I guess its just too tempting to take a cheap shot.’ To find out more about what Hansen is involved in these days, check out his website at www.gunnarhansen.com.
