SHIMIZU NEXT FACES DEATH
Variety reports that following the huge success of his U.S. debut THE GRUDGE, director Takashi Shimizu will nonetheless return to Japan for his next feature, currently titled simply THE DEATH. Part of the J-HORROR THEATER film series being produced by Shimizu’s longtime collaborator Taka Ichise and set for U.S. release by Lions Gate, THE DEATH is scheduled to roll in Japan in March. No plot details have been released yet. The first two J-HORROR entries, Masayuki Ochiai’s KANSEN (INFECTION) and Norio Tsuruta’s YOGEN (PREMONITION) have been big hits as a double-feature release in their home country, taking in $7.3 million in less than three weeks. Lions Gate, meanwhile, gives Shimizu’s first theatrical JU-ON feature its U.S. video debut (including a DVD with extras including Sam Raimi commentary) November 9.
