LIONS GATE CONFIRM SAW SEQUEL
Variety reports that Lions Gate Films and Twisted Pictures will reteam for a sequel to SAW. The inexpensive first film was number three at the box office this past weekend with an $18.3-million debut and held the number-one spot on Halloween day, making the decision to produce a follow-up a no-brainer. ‘We were confident going into this weekend as the only new horror release that we would hit our target audience of genre fans, but this has exceeded all our expectations,’ said Lions Gate president Tom Ortenberg in a statement quoted by Yahoo! Finance.
The companies are targeting a February start date and an October 28, 2005 release for SAW 2, with original director James Wan and scriptwriter/star Leigh Whannell on board as executive producers overseeing a writer and director yet to be named. ‘Theyve entrusted their franchise to us, and were not going to screw it up,’ Twisted principal Oren Koules told Variety. In the meantime, Wan and Whannell will be working more directly on their chiller SHHH for Twisted and Universal.
