SUNDANCE WOLF CREEK HYPE

Moviehole writes:

Horror might be big in la la land at the moment, but there doesn't seem to be much of a market for it at all in Australia. The atrocious 'Cut' made about a buck at the box office, 'Cubby House' gave the marketing team a thumpin' headache, and 'Horseplay', well it wasn't a horror pic, but ****, was it scary.

It's great news to hear that a local horror film called 'Wolf Creek' is raising eyebrows, and has even been selected to play at the renowned Sundance Film Festival.

The film, made for less than $2 million, centres on a group of backpackers who have a run in with a loopy stranger, played by John Jarratt ['All Men are Liars']. Apparently it also throws in a little bit of the 'Peter Falconio' case.

'There seemed to be such a glaring opportunity for a horror film set in the outback,' Producer Greg McLean tells today's edition of The Australian. 'I created the story for this film by merging those two stories.'

McLean says the film was tested in Melbourne last week - with some of the audience scared beyond their wits.'It is incredibly realistic, which I think is what disturbs people, and not self-referential like a lot of horror. It's really doing people's heads in, which is great'.

I'm really keen to see what McLean's done with the film. If he's opened the gates for a horror catergory in the AFI, I'll be darn happy.

The guys at Fangoria recently saw some clips from the film at the AFM, and compared it to one of Kurt Russell's finer moments. 'Based on the clips I caught, think BREAKDOWN'.

The movie co-stars former 'Seachange' star Cassandra Magrath (she was great on the show - I hear she's dating McLean now), the equally impressive Kestie Morassi ['Strange Bedfellows'], and rising young actor Nathan Phillips ['One Perfect Day'].
