SILVER ON GOTHIKA
FANGORIA caught up with super-producer Joel Silver today and talked briefly about the upcoming Dark Castle project GOTHIKA, which will start shooting in April in Toronto under the direction of Mathieu Kassovitz. The project, which stars Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jr., is slightly higher up in the A-list talent-wise, something that Silver wants to do to widen the audience for horror.
‘I think that these scary movies I haven’t seen DREAMCATCHER I hear it’s very scary,’ says Silver. ‘I like these kinds of movies. I think you look at THE RING and you look at THE OTHERS there’s no reason why you can’t bring a higher profile personality into these pictures. If they work and if they’re scary, then maybe we can broaden the audience. I love the horror genre. It’s one of my favorite genres. And I love to work within it, so maybe this allows me to broaden it out. We’ve done very well with these pictures.’
Though Dark Castle movies are noted for being big studio horror films that don’t cost an arm and a leg, the inclusion of bigger name talent does make GOTHIKA the most expensive Dark Castle project yet. ‘This one’s going to cost a little more than the others,’ admits Silver. ‘The other ones are 20-25. This will be a little more.’ When asked if it would be around $40 million, Silver suggested it would be slightly lower than that.
GOTHIKA is currently aimed at an October 24th release date.
