Roost Finds a Home at Showtime and Vitagraph
Variety reports:
Showtime has snapped up all North American rights to Ti West horror film ‘The Roost’ in a mid-six-figure deal following the pic’s L.A. Film Festival screening.
American Cinematheque’s distrib arm, Vitagraph Films, will handle the theatrical release in early fall. Showtime will then distribute ‘The Roost’ on homevid and TV/cable, likely taking advantage of Halloween tie-ins.
An homage to genre films of the 1970s and ’80s, ‘The Roost’ was produced by Susan Leber and James McKenney under the ScareFlix banner, a division of cult horror helmer Larry Fessenden’s company Glass Eye Pix.
‘Part of the mission of ScareFlix is to celebrate raw talent,’ said Fessenden (‘Wendigo’), who exec produced. ‘Ti West is an intuitive stylist, and I tried to give him total freedom within the budget. I think it really paid off.’
Vitagraph’s prior genre releases include the original Japanese version of ‘The Grudge’ and Takashi Miike’s ‘Audition.’ It sold cable rights to Showtime (for the Sundance Channel) on the former pic as well as Miike’s ‘The Happiness of the Katakuris,’ among other indie titles.
Josh Braun of Submarine Entertainment and Roger Kass of RingTheJing Entertainment handled sales on ‘The Roost.’ Acquisition was headed by Showtime’s Larry Greenberg and Vitagraph Films’ David Schultz.
Pic bowed at Austin’s SXSW Film Festival in March. Final L.A. Film Festival unspooling is tonight at the Sunset 5.
