SILENT HILL 3 INFO
Electronic Gaming Monthly has a two page spread in their latest issue (165) and in it, they describe the gameplay for the first hour. Prepare yourself for what may turn out to be the freakiest horror game ever. Silent Hill 3 has 3 main characters, Heather, a normal teenager, Douglas Cartland, a middle-age P.I., and Claudia, a strange ‘witchy woman’ who knows more than she’s telling.
The demo EGM got to play has Heather entering an amusement park gateway late at night. She spots some empty giant rabbit costumes with blood smeared all over thier lips just laying around. There are also two tall grated boxes and inside of them is wrapped, bloody, meat, like from a butcher shop, only more human shaped.
Heather eventually gets to some empty shops, where a split-headed dog chases her as well as another deformed creature, which is faceless, and has oversized fleshy arms. She ends up running through maze-like shops until finally she gets into a room filled with candy, she frantically searches for a way out, but there isn’t and the monsters end up surrounding her, just before they get her though, she wakes up, realizing that it was all a dream.
Of course, things get weirder, she is in Silent Hill after all. She walks out into the mall where she meets Douglas Cartland, a detective that tells her someone wants to meet her. ‘It’s about your birth,’ he says and follows her to the bathroom. But she’s able to ditch him by climbing through a window. She finds a gun on the floor next to a security guard who’s getting his face grinded off by the same monster from her dream.
Eventually, after running and searching for a while she meets Claudia, who tells her ‘They’ve come to bear witness, to the rebirth of paradise spoiled by mankind.’ She refers to Heather as, ‘the one who will lead us to paradise with bloodstained hands.’ Then, Heather is seized by a headache and passes out.
The demo ends with a trip down an elevator into a grimy basement that looks like hell. Right before it ends Heather comes face to face with a giant worm, and apparently, the flesh around it’s eyeless head is very ‘fore-skin like,’ and it splits to reveal massive jaws.
Producer Akira Yamaoka says that, ‘The game brings back the occult element from the original Silent Hill,’ and there actually appears to be some kind of overall mythology at work.
Just how insane will this game get? We’ll have to wait for Summer 2003 (probably May) to know for sure, but so far it’s only been announced for PS 2, and Yamaoka says that as of now, they don’t have a plan to release it to any other system, but chances are it’ll make it’s way over to X-Box sooner or later. The game will also ship with an original music soundtrack. Be sure to pick up the latest issue of EGM for even more Silent Hill 3 goodness!
