FANGORIA has learned from a very reliable source that Screen Gems has handed off theatrical distribution rights to Eli (CABIN FEVER) Roth’s violent HOSTEL to Lions Gate Films. No word yet on the reason for the switch, or potential release dates for the Euro-lensed backpacker-nightmare flick. Lions Gate has proven a gutsy industry leader in distributing hard R-rated flicks (HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, HIGH TENSION, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, SAW, etc.), whereas Screen Gems appears more comfortable embracing PG-13 fare (THE CAVE and the current hit EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE serving as recent examples, as well as parent company Sony’s THE FOG remake). HOSTEL screened to much acclaim at the recent Toronto Film Festival. Check back here soon for updates on this developing story.
