Fright filmmaker Jeff Lieberman gave Fango the news about a new project he’s doing for television through his KaBoo Productions, to air on Court TV. “The show’s called ’TIL DEATH DO US PART, and they’re half-hour true stories of spousal murder,” he tells us. “Each episode starts off with a wedding, and we watch the marriage deteriorate from there. And attending each wedding is a character called the Groom Reaper, a time-traveling soothsayer of doom played by John Waters. He’ll tell us who the couple is, how they met—and how long it’s going to take before one kills the other. And then we dramatize the story up to the murder, and the killer getting caught. It’s all taken from court records of people who were convicted of the murders.
“I’m creator/executive producer, and I’m writing and directing the pilot—I start shooting on Halloween day!” he continues. “I’ll be shooting the episodes like half-hour low-budget horror movies; that’s the style I’m using. Anthony Pepe from SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER is doing the makeup effects for the pilot, and hopefully the whole series. I’ll shoot it more gruesome, to use on the DVD later on, but it’ll be cleaned up for television. Court TV is expecting to order 12 more episodes, and they’ve said that the series will go on sometime in the early second quarter of 2006, probably around April 1.” Lieberman is excited to be working with legendary filmmaker Waters—“John’s a great guy—it’s like cult meets cult, a really great combination”—and Waters, who appeared last year in SEED OF CHUCKY, told The Hollywood Reporter that the Groom Reaper role has fulfilled his aspiration to be a horror icon. “I’ve always been jealous of Vincent Price’s career,” he tells the trade. “Maybe now that he’s dead, I can hijack it.”
Meanwhile, SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER just won Best Feature at the Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival in Italy. You can read our set-visit article in Fango #247.
