VAN HELSING DATE SWITCH
One studio’s misery is another’s opportunity as the problems getting THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN off the ground have caused Columbia Pictures to move it to the 2nd of July, 2004, according to Variety (potentially annihilating Will Smith’s Isaac Asimov adaptation I, ROBOT). Which means that the early May slotMay 7, 2004was open…for about five minutes. Universal immediately moved VAN HELSING onto that date, staking out all of May for its monster epic, which got a lot of positive heat off its ShoWest presentation. The moviecurrently filming all over the worldis meant by Universal to launch a major franchise, so they will be doing everything in their power to make certain its release date will maximize its box office potential. The early-May slot certainly worked for VAN HELSING writer/director Stephen Sommers’ MUMMY movies, both of which got the jump on their respective summers and earned big bucks as a result.
