DANTE TOMASELLI & SATAN’S PLAYGROUND
Here’s what Dante has to say about the latest on his next feature, Satan’s Playground .
‘I’ve been talking with different producers about investing in SATAN’S PLAYGROUND. They want too much input. I just won’t have it. For such a low-budget ($350, 000) I should retain control. I’ve heard over and over that it’s ‘too gory and violent for these times.’ What times? If anything, SATAN’S PLAYGROUND matches the mood of the world. Producers want to lighten it up. Add jokes, more humor, more dialogue. No. This one has to be my darkest, most stripped-down film of all. It’s a monster movie about a vacationing family lost in the woods. It’s not multilayered or arty. The film’s storyline is extremely simple. The emphasis is on scare sequences and creating a dread-filled atmosphere…SATAN’S PLAYGROUND is definitely influenced by unsettling horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – films I saw before I was 10-years-old and left deep impressions. I can’t help it – I’m going to do this movie my way or no way at all. I’ve already developed the reputation for being inflexible and that’s okay. No one can tell me how my films should be. That’s why they call the movies I do independent films.
Jack Swain, the investor who paid for DESECRATION and HORROR, may pay for SATAN’S PLAYGROUND. He just wants to make some money back on HORROR first. Swain gives me complete creative control. So hopefully, if all goes as planned, I’ll be shooting SATAN’S PLAYGROUND within the year, maybe around October or November…As you know, Felissa Rose (SLEEPAWAY CAMP), Ellen Sandweiss (THE EVIL DEAD) and Michael Berryman (THE HILLS HAVE EYES) all have starring roles…I’ll keep you posted.’
