Variety reports that Dimension Films will produce and release a literal chiller called SHIVER. The movie is an example of the current vogue for “torture movies” inspired by the success of HOSTEL; in first-timer Mikey Wigart’s script, reportedly based on a true story, a group of partiers get into a car accident on a snowy New Year’s Eve in Minnesota. They seek refuge at a remote house, not knowing at first that the widowed doctor who lives there is obsessed with the scientific study of torture. Michael Cuesta, who made a highly praised debut with the indie drama L.I.E. and has helmed several episodes of SIX FEET UNDER, will direct and produce. He tells the trade, “When it’s done honestly, with serious intent, [the horror genre] can tap into the social fears and anxieties of our time. I find that exploring the grotesque, the abhorrent and what disturbs us is a chance to convey some universal truths about us and our society.” No start date has been announced.
