FANGORIA BLOOD DRIVE II winner Paul (MEANS TO AN END) Solet dropped Fango a line and some pics (see below) on his latest horror short, an ambitious chiller called GRACE.
The story revolves around Madeline Matheson, an eight months’ pregnant woman who is determined to deliver her unborn child, Grace, naturally. When an accident leaves Grace dead inside her, Madeline insists on carrying the baby to term. Weeks later, when Madeline delivers naturally, the child miraculously returns to life.
Regarding the shoot, Solet tells Fango, “Flipped SUV, dead baby, PVC-clad midwives—who could ask for anything more? Oh, and I ripped Brian Austin Green’s eye out and tracheotomized him with a pen. While he was hanging upside down! Liza Weil, who you may remember from STIR OF ECHOES, co-stars. We shot five nights on 35mm. We raised some serious hell.”
The lensing turned out to be a (Fango) family affair. “The Fangorians were thick on set,” Solet says. “Adam [MAINSTREAM] Barnick, also from BLOOD DRIVE II, shot the behind-the-scenes documentary, and Chris Garetano, of the first BLOOD DRIVE [INSIDE], shot 15 hours of footage for his new feature, SON OF HORROR BUSINESS. These are relationships that wouldn’t have happened without the BLOOD DRIVE projects, so I wanted to thank FANGORIA.
“We wrapped [last] Monday,” he continues. “We shot in LA at an 8,000-square-foot warehouse I finagled and on location at Griffith Park and a local baby store. Eli’s brother, Gabe Roth, and I begin posting this [past] weekend. His team, MFX Special Projects, is responsible for our gorgeous sets.”
Not surprisingly, Solet distilled the events in GRACE from the first act of a feature by the same name that the filmmaker hopes to springboard off of the short. “The full-length version is written and ready to roll as soon as I find the right financier,” Solet says. “I turned down an option on it last year so I could shoot it myself. Best decision I’ve made thus far in my short career. Rather than shooting the feature digitally, I decided to film a short on 35mm and push it to studio quality for eight minutes. I intend to use the short to generate enough financing to do the feature right.”
