ANGUS SCRIMM OFF SEASON
Angus Scrimm will co-star in THE OFF SEASON, the new film by CANNIBALLISTIC! writer/director James Felix McKenney. This ghost story, to be shot in Maine later this month, will be produced by Larry (WENDIGO) Fessenden.
In the beginning, THE OFF SEASON appears to be the story of a young couple from New York City moving up to Maine to get away from it all, McKenney tells Fango. Soon, strange things begin to happen in the one-room apartment that they occupythings that the once close couple cannot discuss with each other. This is not a typical ghost story resulting from a tragic death, but a tale of a place haunted by guilt and the fear of abandonment.
THE OFF SEASON is a script that I wrote back in 1996, he continues. I had just seen Lars von Triers THE KINGDOM and felt inspired. But I wanted to make a movie that didnt take place in a haunted mansion, castle or other giant structure, but in one room. The people in THE OFF SEASON are sharing close quarters with the unhappy spirits. Its easy to run away and slam a door between yourself and something that scares you, but I think that the most terrifying thing is being forced to look the thing that frightens you right in the eye.
McKenney has been a longtime fan of Scrimm and the PHANTASM films. I like movies that are able to combine a dead serious tone with oddball characters and moments that make the frightening scenes that much more chilling, he says. It is this type of non-traditional tone that I feel will set our ghost story apart from many of the recent films of this type. THE OFF SEASON is a terrifying film that also has a its own warmth and charm.
While casting is still ongoing for THE OFF SEASON, the main leads have been set. Joining Scrimm wll be Christina (THE ADDICTION) Campenella, Don (CANNIBALLISTIC!) Wood, New York performance artists Jamie Sneider and Francine Pado, as well as Fessenden himself. Larry is now paying the price for making the mistake of encouraging me to make another movie, McKenney adds. Besides acting in the film, he and his company, Glass Eye Pix, are producing. Well be shooting in a southern resort town called Old Orchard Beach, ME. Its the town next to the one I grew up in and where we shot CANNIBALLISTIC!
