While development continues on the film version of Steve Alten’s giant-shark novel MEG, the producers of the Fox TV series PRISON BREAK have picked up the option to turn Alten’s THE LOCH into a feature. The novel, published last year in hardcover and this month as a trade paperback by Tsunami Books, is based on Alten’s exhaustive research about Scotland’s legendary Loch Ness Monster, and centers on young biologist Zachary Wallace, who nearly drowned in the Loch as a child and has been haunted by nightmares ever since. When his estranged father is accused of murder, Zachary goes back to Scotland to clear his dad’s name, and confronts the Loch’s mysterious denizen.
Alten is currently in the midst of a tour to promote the book, accompanied by a unique prop: a 7-foot speculative replica of the Loch Ness Monster’s skull. This recreation is derived from a 4-inch tooth found by two college students in a deer carcass near the Loch; working with forensic scientists, Alten extrapolated the skull from that tooth, which is said to offer the first DNA evidence of the creature’s existence. You can find tour dates/locations and more info about Alten’s books and the MEG movie at his personal website.
