While the modern-classic original THE STEPFATHER languishes in the U.S. DVD netherworld, Variety reports that a remake of the 1987 domestic chiller is being prepared by Screen Gems, Maverick Films and producer Greg (DRUMLINE) Mooradian.
The first film (which also spawned a pair of sequels) starred Terry O’Quinn in his breakout role of a man obsessed with having the perfect family. He marries into fatherless families, then kills them when they don’t live up to his standards; Shelley Hack and Jill Schoelen co-starred as his current wife and stepdaughter. (The screenplay by veteran thriller novelist Donald Westlake was based on the real-life case of John List, who went on the lam after slaughtering his family in 1971 and was finally captured after the TV series AMERICA’S MOST WANTED aired a story about the case 18 years later.) No writer or director have yet been announced for the new STEPFATHER.
