British director Michael J. Bassett, whose WILDERNESS has been winning raves at international genre festivals, will not be directing the Wes and Jonathan Craven-scripted HILLS HAVE EYES remake/sequel (premake?), as we previously reported. “I met with Wes and they asked me, but I’m into another project and schedules didn’t allow it,” Bassett, who will introduce WILDERNESS at Montreal’s Fantasia festival this month, tells Fango. German-born director Martin (60 SECONDS) Weisz, who has helmed over 350 music videos (for such artists as Brandy, Puff Daddy, Korn, Live, Crazytown, Sisqo, Nickelback, Fuel, Mel B, JC Chasez, etc.) will now tackle the second HILLS. In addition, Pluto actor Michael Bailey Smith will be returning in the follow-up (due next March from Fox Searchlight), even though his character died in the last desert outing; this time, Smith will play the mutants’ new leader.
