“Fearless” director Ronny Yu tells Coming Soon that he’d be interested in doing a sequel to his horror hit, “Freddy Vs. Jason”. And though previous word was that “Evil Dead” creator Sam Raimi had killed such an idea – Yu says the suggestion to team Freddy and Jason with Ash, from “Evil Dead”, is still very much a possibility.
“Yeah, they've been talking about it, and they even talk about bringing Ash [from Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" movies] into the equation, and I thought it's terrific. It's almost like an updated version of "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly." If they really want to do it and they want me to do it, I'd love to do it. It would be a lot of fun.”
In 2004, “Evil Dead” creator Sam Raimi told Movieweb.com that he was against lending New Line the character of ‘Ash’ for the film – because he had plans to use the character himself, for something down the track.
"I have great respect for those franchises," Raimi said. "I didn't want to be in a position where I was protecting Ash, the character that I want to eventually make another movie with one day, protecting him and not allowing the director to do what he felt he had to do. I didn't want to be in a weird position like that. I have a great deal or respect for Sean Cunningham. I think he's a brilliant filmmaker. He made some classics. I just didn't think it was a winning great situation for anybody.
“As fun as that sounded, I think they're in two different worlds, the Evil Dead and Jason/Freddy. Maybe another time, that would be a better combination."
Robert Englund, better known as razor-nailed Freddy Krueger, said he was keen for “Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash” to come to fruition.
“That's the one that I love, only because I've done film festivals and I'm a big fan of Bruce Campbell's [star of the Evil Dead series]”, Englund told DVDVerdict.com. “I was just in Edinburgh and saw a great double bill and after a few glasses of scotch whiskey we saw the midnight showing which was Bubba Ho-Tep. That was a lot of fun. And I love Bruce and I think he and Sam Raimi and that whole crew of people are so smart and talented. I think it might be fun, but they'd really sort of have to go to the wall with this one. Once you bring Bruce Campbell and the Ash character on you'd have to go over the top. It's almost like this would have to be the last one. Ash would have to save the world from sequels”.
Another idea floating about – though likely to have a few hurdles to cross too, since both properties are at different studios – is to team Freddy with “Halloween” rogue Michael Myers.
