Associate producer Scott Kenyon Barker gave Fango the scoop that principal photography has commenced on FROM A PLACE OF DARKNESS, a Spyglass Entertainment horror feature currently shooting in Tuscon, Arizona. Directed by Doug Raine from a script he wrote with Barker and starring CARNIVÀLE’s John Savage and Bronson Pinchot, the film “tells the story of a documentary filmmaker who rents an old warehouse to turn into a studio,” Barker tells us, “only to find that it has ties to the snuff film industry…and a few unexpected residents. It’s designed with Fango readers in mind!” DARKNESS was inspired by “some very shifty characters I met while working as a journalist,” as well as “my own investigations into whether or not snuff films are real,” according to Barker.
Savage, who also has the horror film THE ATTIC in the can, plays “Vic, a mysterious mob guy who specializes in making snuff films for wealthy clients,” while Pinchot portrays “Carl, a sleazy developer who wants to invest in a documentary about Vic.” Rounding out the cast is actor Travis (2007’s THE HITCHER) Schuldt as “Miles, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, who is investigating Vic’s ‘work,’ ” and Conor Duffy as “Miles’ brother Sean, who gets involved with the documentary, to his great regret.” Natalie Zea and Valery Ortiz co-star as the wives of Miles and Sean, respectively.
Scheduled for a 16-day shoot and budgeted at $500,000, DARKNESS sports makeup FX by Michael (BLADE II) Peterson and visual FX by Chris Bailey. Director of photography Hugh Johnson, whom Barker calls “a genuine craftsman with amazing talent,” is on board as well, with the producer predicting, “When the film is finished, people are going to guess it was a big-budget production!” Barker promises more details once FROM A PLACE OF DARKNESS wraps, as well as production stills and a “first-person account” of the film, so stay tuned to this site as we bring you further developments.
