Nightfall Pictures, the indie production outfit headed by filmmakers Brad and Josephina Sykes (WITHIN THE WOODS, MUTATION), recently wrapped principal photography on its newest feature, PLAGUERS. Genre fave Steve
Railsback (LIFEFORCE, ED GEIN, DEVIL’S REJECTS) stars in this tale of an alien virus that breaks out on an earthbound space freighter, turning its crew into bloodthirsty, demonic creatures.
“A lot of my favorite Eighties horror movies – films like ALIENS, THE THING, and most of Cronenberg’s work – mixed horror and sci-fi to good effect, and PLAGUERS is definitely in that tradition,” says writer/director Sykes. “At the same time, I didn’t want to just do a rip-off or a retread of those films. I wanted to create something new.”
The task of creating the PLAGUERS went to Ron Karkoska and Mark Villalobos’ Monster FX, whose credits include TAMARA and 2001 MANIACS. “Ron and Mark did amazing work on very low budgets for me on movies like DEATH FACTORY and GOTH, ” Sykes notes. “PLAGUERS is a much bigger show and has everything: character makeups, creature suits, and -of course – lots of gore. It was a tall order, but they did an amazing job. We all tried to make a movie that really delivers, and I think we accomplished that.”
The talented young cast also includes Alexis Zibolis (THE DA VINCI TREASURE), Jared Michaels (HALLOWEEN NIGHT), Robert James (DEAD MEN WALKING) and Noelle Perris (UNHOLY PASSIONS).
“Everyone gave 110 percent. You have to; there’s no other way to do it, “Sykes says of his cast. “We all worked very hard to make a scary, intense movie that would really stand out from the crowd. I think we accomplished that; hopefully audiences will agree.”
PLAGUERS is currently in post production with an official site coming soon. It will be making the festival rounds in 2007.
