The buzz continues on an operatic version of David Cronenberg’s THE FLY. That’s right film composer and longtime Cronenberg collaborator Howard Shore has reunited with the director to translate the 1986 FX-filled allegory starring Jeff Goldblum to the opera. Shore is handling the music, naturally, but Los Angeles playwright David Henry (M. BUTTERFLY) Hwang is writing the libretto. Even more surprising than this bizarre stage adaptation is Cronenberg’s debut as the project’s director. Various sources report that the show is scheduled to premiere in Paris on July 1, 2008, followed by a U.S. premiere in Los Angeles Sept. 7, 2008. Los Angeles Opera and the Théâtre du Châtelet are co-producing, and in addition to Shore, Cronenberg is bringing aboard another FLY feature vet: his sister Denise, who is acting as costume designer.
