Actor Corbin Bernsen, currently in the throes of directing the toxic-maniac chiller DEAD AIR, says that while there won’t be a third in the DENTIST series he starred in, he has another potential horror icon up his sleeve. “I’m in the process of creating a movie called THE CLOWN, which will be based on the same basic story structure as THE DENTIST,” Bernsen tells Fango. “We have this clown who has been with a little ramshackle traveling circus forever, and is having an affair with a woman. Well, suddenly she begins cheating on him with the trapeze artist, and as you can guess, the clown snaps and then the shit hits the fan.”
Bernsen, who after wrapping up DEAD AIR will return to Canada for his recurring role on the TV series PSYCH, further reports that an early draft of THE CLOWN has been written but was ultimately discarded. “At this point, I’m just trying to find the right writer,” he says. “I talked with Rob Schmidt when I did MASTERS OF HORROR last year and he thought it was a cool idea, so we’ve decided to get a script together.” He adds that in a perfect world, he’d like to get THE CLOWN rolling by the end of summer for release later in the fall.
And while the murderous adventures of THE DENTIST appear to be over, the actor retains fond memories of that teeth-pulling experience. “I enjoyed the acting experience of it,” he says. “I love going to the dark side, and THE DENTIST definitely allowed me to do that. But it was also some of the most difficult acting I ever had to do. You don’t check that kind of character at the door at the end of the day. But no, I didn’t go home and strangle my wife.”
