Fango has learned that Picturehouse has moved its Spanish genre pickup THE ORPHANAGE from its originally announced March 28, 2008 U.S. debut to a December 28 berth this year. No doubt the distributor is hoping that the Juan Antonio Bayona-directed film, which has won raves in Europe, will repeat the critical, financial and awards-season success of PAN’S LABYRINTH, whose director Guillermo del Toro was a producer on ORPHANAGE and which opened at the same time last year.
Meanwhile, according to Box Office Mojo, Warner Bros. has moved Michael Dougherty’s much-awaited TRICK ‘R TREAT out of its October 5 slot and will instead release it sometime next year. It hasn’t been reported why the studio moved the film out of its natural habitat in the Halloween season—and it remains to be seen whether Dimension will take the opportunity to move Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN (which is undergoing extensive reshoots) from August 31 to a little closer to the holiday, with both the 5th and the 12th (recently vacated by Lionsgate’s THE EYE) now open.
