Fango got the first word from director Dante (SATAN’S PLAYGROUND) Tomaselli that Dominique Swain (pictured) has joined Dee Wallace in the cast of his new chiller THE OCEAN. The actress, who broke out in the title role of the LOLITA remake and has since appeared in the genre films DEVOUR, DEAD MARY and Hans Rodionoff’s upcoming TRANCE, plays Maria, a young mother living in Puerto Rico whose husband and son are killed in a freak drowning accident. Her estranged mother Cathy (Wallace), a psychic who had visions of the tragedy, travels to be with her, and the fractious family dynamics that ensue are mirrored by increasingly frightening signs that the sea around them is rising to wipe out mankind. Vincent (THE SOPRANOS) Pastore is set to play Joe, Maria’s father and Cathy’s ex-husband; Fango’s Michael Gingold scripted the film with Tomaselli.
“As many people know, there was a shake-up, castwise, when Feverpitch Pictures came on board this project,” Tomaselli tells Fango. “Certain actors I originally planned on working with, they just didn’t agree on. I was thrilled when Dee Wallace signed on as the lead, and since the film is about family relationships, the cast really had to reflect that. For many months, we were trying to figure out who would play Dee’s daughter in the movie. Finally, the name Dominique Swain came at me from many angles. I remembered her from LOLITA and FACE/OFF and then I realized I had just watched her in ALPHA DOG.
“Well, luckily Clint Morris at the entertainment website Moviehole.net had her contact info,” Tomaselli continues. “In fact, he was one of the people who suggested her. So I got in touch, sent her the script and a couple of days later she got back to me. I was happy to hear that she deeply connected with THE OCEAN. I know Dominique will bring something interesting and provocative to the character. She’s a bewitching actress. We’re scheduled to start shooting in late January.” Keep your eyes here and on THE OCEAN’s MySpace page for further updates.
