Though DIARY OF THE DEAD has yet to be released (it’s scheduled to hit theaters February 15 from Dimension), festival buzz for George A. Romero’s fifth zombie epic has been so hot that a sequel has already gotten the green light. Fans of the undead king’s work have naturally been overjoyed by the news of yet another impending Romero ghoul picture, and yet much speculation surrounds the proposed follow-up. Chief among the questions is whether or not this will be a typical stand-alone Romero sequel (each succeeding film has followed a different set of people suffering through various stages of the ghoul plague), or one that details the further exploits of the characters established in DIARY.
Fango spoke with longtime Romero producing partner Peter Grunwald (MONKEY SHINES, BRUISER, LAND OF THE DEAD) to get the skinny on the current state of DIARY OF THE DEAD 2. “This will be a true sequel,” he tells us, “the next chapter in the adventure that began with DIARY, with many of the same characters and actors. It’s the first time George has done that with one of his DEAD films, and it’s going to be a really cool, interesting departure.
“The film will be shot in the first person, and in HD, like DIARY, but the themes will shift and broaden,” Grunwald continues. “George has always tried not to repeat himself and he never makes a film unless he has something to say, but you’ll have to wait till the script leaks on-line to find out what he’s up to this time. And the film will be shot in Canada. Details to follow.”
