Variety has reported the seven films chosen for the Best Makeup “bake-off” for this year’s Academy Awards, with Tim Burton’s SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET the only horror pic in the running. The other features that will have samples screened on January 19 for the Academy’s makeup branch, which will then choose three to nominate for the Best Makeup Oscar, are 300, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, LA VIE EN ROSE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END and NORBIT (fat suits and other prosthetic wizardry by veteran Rick Baker).
The latter is an ironic choice, as severely negative response to the movie itself was cited by some as costing star Eddie Murphy last year’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar for DREAMGIRLS. The Academy Award nominations will be announced January 22.
